A Lunch Date With Friends...
That Changed My Life Forever!!!
Back in April of 2011, my husband and I were having lunch with dear friends. During our conversation, the topic of adoption and orphans came up. I will never forget the moment my sweet friend said:
“Adoption is God’s heart. We are commanded in Scripture to care for the orphans.”
In that instant, something shifted. My eyes were opened, my heart was lit on fire, and I knew my life was about to change. Sound dramatic? Not really — I believe this is exactly how God works.
From that day forward, Scripture began leaping off the pages, stirring something deep within me. My ears were finally hearing what the Spirit wanted me to hear.
“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows
in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” — James 1:27
For the next eight months, I wrestled with a deep burden for the orphan. I read their stories — children starving, frightened, abused, abandoned. Children with no one to love them. Life as I knew it would never be the same.
I had to do something.
At first, I thought it had to be something big — something extraordinary or groundbreaking. I believed the lie that the only way to make a difference was to do something “spectacular.” But in that striving, I didn’t see the simple thing God was inviting me into.
He wasn’t calling me to be a superhero.
He was asking me to use the gift He had already given me: baking bread.
So simple. So practical. So unexpected. And yes — so delicious.
The name “Bread For Life” was a gift from the Lord as well. I will never forget the day He whispered it to my spirit as I was walking from my kitchen to the living room. It was clear and powerful — as if He were speaking aloud in my home:
“Your ministry shall be called ‘Bread For Life.’ You will bake bread and sell it, and every penny will go to the urgent needs of my children. Your bread will give life — the same way that I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE.”
“The LORD confides in those who fear him;
He makes his covenant known to them.” — Psalm 25:14
And with that, Bread For Life was born. God was unfolding HIS ministry in my heart — and all I had to do was take the first step.
So, in my tiny kitchen at home (and I mean tiny!), I began to bake. I had no idea how it would all come together. I didn’t know how I would “sell” the bread — I had never done anything like this before. But I trusted the Lord with the details — and He provided.
My church welcomed me to set up a table on Sunday mornings, and even allowed me time to share the vision — how I believed God could use these loaves to feed His children.
That very first Sunday, I baked 20 loaves of bread — and we raised $648. I will never forget the joy of realizing what that money could do for children in need. It was overwhelming — in the best way.
A total of $20,000 in the first year!
And now, year-to-date, over $1,000,000 has flowed through this little bread-baking ministry — all through spreading awareness and offering a simple loaf of bread.
We serve a mighty God!
From that tiny kitchen, Bread For Life began changing lives — not just the lives of children in Uganda, but also the hearts of my family, our church, and our community. The joy of serving Christ is truly contagious.
I didn’t need a new skill.
I didn’t need a new identity.
I didn’t become a super-hero.
I simply turned on the oven, mixed flour, sugar, eggs, and pumpkin — and trusted God to do the rest. And He did.
100% of the glory and praise belongs to Him alone!
I am an ordinary person. I’m simply a mother of four, doing what God has called me to do. I truly believe God uses ordinary people doing ordinary things — every single day. We just need to be willing.
I’ve always said, “If we are willing, He is able.” And it’s true.
Today, we are a nonprofit ministry committed to baking bread until every orphan is fed.
Would you join us?
Together, we can make a difference.
One loaf at a time.

- In 6 weeks, we raised $3,600.
- In 10 weeks, $5,000.
- In 5 months, $7,000.
- In 10 months, $10,000.
- In the last months of 2012 alone, another $10,000.

“People from my first home say I'm brave. They tell me I'm strong. They pat me on the back and say, 'Way to go. Good job.' But the truth is, I am not really very brave; I am not really very strong; and I am not doing anything spectacular. I am simply doing what God has called me to do as a person who follows Him. He said to feed His sheep and He said to care for 'the least of these,' so that's what I'm doing, with the help of a lot people who make it possible and in the company of those who make my life worth living" - Katie David, Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption
"And like our Savior, who poured out His life and blood so we have reason to rejoice, we were made to lay down our lives and give until it hurts. We are most alive when we are loving and actively giving of ourselves because we were made to do these things. It is when we live like this that the Spirit of God moves and acts in and through us in ways that on our own we are not capable of. This is our purpose for living."

This song by Christy Nockels has been my theme song since this journey began, "Waiting Here for You". It is a song that has ministered to my heart from day one. I spent many nights on my knees waiting for the Lord. I cried many tears asking Him how He could use me in His Kingdom to do His work. I find great comfort listening to this song as I constantly seek His will for my life. I pray you are blessed by the words of this song and pray also, how YOU can make a difference in the Kingdom of God. He has a plan for each of us, no matter how big or how small. If we are willing, He will use us.

If faith can move the mountains Let the mountains move We come with expectation Waiting here for you, waiting here for you You're the Lord of all creation And still you know my heart The author of salvation You've loved us from the start Waiting here for you With our hands lifted high in praise And it's you we adore Singing Alleluia You are everything you've promised Your faithfulness is true And we're desperate for your presence All we need is you |
Waiting here for you, Lord With our hands lifted high in praise And it's you, Lord, we adore Singing Alleluia We will wait for you, Lord, he'll stand with you We will sing alleluia Singing Alleluia, alleluia Singing Alleluia, alleluia Waiting here for you With our hands lifted high in praise And it's you we adore, we adore Singing Alleluia Waiting here for you With our hands lifted high in praise And it's you we adore Singing Alleluia, singing Alleluia |
